Julie Shelley stood at the door of her clinic, watching the old River Ranch truck coast to a stop and the driver emerge.
When Zach called ahead to tell her his brother and Cade were on their way with an injured dog, she had expected Shawn. When did Adam get back in town? With all their leaving and returning to Sagebrush, she hadn’t seen him since high school graduation.
There were changes.
Adam sprinted to the passenger side of the truck, then, ever so carefully, took a coat-wrapped bundle from Cade's arms.
"Good morning," she called out, "Merry Christmas", but her cheerfulness was out of place in this emergency.
Still, Adam gave her a nod back, acknowledging her effort.
"Level Two, emergency. She has come back from level one, resuscitation. She is shocky and she has an undetermined injury on her left front leg," he reported.
If Julie hadn't known he was in ER, she would have figured it out.
"Bring her in here." Julie led the way to an exam room.
With critical scrutiny, she watched Adam lay the injured dog on her exam table. Since the man was wearing only a T-shirt with his worn jeans and boots, it must be Adams' Carhartt wrapped around the dog. The Adam she knew wouldn't have given her the time of day, much less the coat off his own back. But two dozen years tended to change a person. She wasn't the awkward, self-conscious girl she'd been back then, at least not very often.
But all this analysis would have to wait. She had a dog to save.
